Devi Ahilya University, also called Indore University, is a major university in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India. Devi Ahilya University: Indore University was established in 1964 by an act of legislative assembly of Madhya Pradesh. The jurisdiction of the university was limited to Indore district. In 1988, the university was renamed after Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar as Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya. The word vishwavidyalaya is Hindi for university, thus the university is called Devi Ahilya University: Indore University. During reorganization of the universities, its jurisdiction was expanded over to Indore division, which spans over seven districts.

The university has its administrative offices and primary school campus on Rabindranath Tagore Marg in Indore. The Takshashila Campus on Khandwa Road is an extension campus directly administered by the university. The university regulates all the schools within the two campuses. There are many other colleges affiliated to the university in Indore division. The university has 153 affiliated colleges imparting education at under-graduate and post-graduate levels in basic and professional disciplines. The university has 6000 students in its campus and total 120,000 students in affiliated colleges.

Consequent on the reorganization of States on 1st November 1956, eight districts of Madhya Pradesh have been transferred to the Bombay State and the remaining fourteen districts of the Madhya Pradesh  along with Madhya Bharat, Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh were merged to form the new Madhya Pradesh. As there was no Public Service Commission for the States of Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh, these being Part “C” States, and the recruitment for these States was being done by the Union Public Service Commission, the records of cases dealt with by the Union Public Service Commission for these two States  were not available to the new Commission.

The Annual Reports of the former Madhya Bharat Commission for the years 1954-55 and 1955-56 were duly presented to the Rajpramukh by that Commission but they were not published and put up before the legislature as required under the Constitution.

The Annual Report of the former Madhya Pradesh Commission for the calendar year 1955 could not be compiled owing to rush of work due to the impending  problems of reorganization of States.

The National Policy of Education (NPE) 1986, emphasized that distance education is an important medium for the development and promotion of higher education. In this context, for the expansion and promotion of distance education the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), Government of India took an important decision that in the VIIIth year plan every state should establish a state open university following the distance education pattern. On this basis Madhya Pradesh Bhoj (Open) University (MPBOU) was established under an Act of State Assembly in 1991.

Jiwaji University was established as a teaching and affiliating University on 23rd May 1964, under the provision of M. P. Government Ordinance no. 15 of 1963. Dr. Sarwapalli Radhakrishanan, the then President of India, laid the foundation stone of the University Campus on 11th December 1964.

Right from its inception, Jiwaji University started with a status of a residential and an affiliating University. The territorial jurisdiction of the affiliation extends to six districts of Gwalior and Chambal Division, viz., Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Guna, Shivpuri and Datia.
