NEC to Set Up Paramedical Institution in Nagaland

North Eastern Council (NEC) has decided to establish a paramedical institution in Nagaland. The paramedical institution will be set up in public private partnership (PPP) mode. As per sources, the decision was taken in an NEC review meeting, chaired by Bijoy Krishna Handique, Minister of Mines and DoNER in Delhi recently.

In this connection, NEC has approached Hospital Services Consultancy Corp Ltd under the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to scrutinize three aspects, including manpower, referral services and health infrastructure in the North East. The institution will be established in the Regional Referral Hospital Campus in Nagaland where adequate land is available. The MoU between NEC and Nagaland will be formally inked next month.

Mr Handique also emphasized on the issue of a study on health infrastructure gaps prevailing in the North Eastern Region. It was decided in the meeting that study will not cover the primary health sector but restrict itself to secondary and referral services. In addition, that NEC would conduct the study on the operationalisation of assets in the health sector in Nagaland and Tripura. Moreover, upgradation of the nursing college in Regional College of Nursing, Imphal was discussed.

Furthermore, Mr Handique reviewed the status of the studies / action plans in various sectors of Vision 2020 for the North Eastern Region. The action plans for the Inland Waterways and Telecommunications sectors are ready for implementation. The action plans for other sectors like Railways, tourism, civil aviation, Border Trade and Power Transmission are also in the pipeline. NEC has commissioned a masterplan on circuit-based tourism in the Northeast by TCS. This study has been supported by the tourism ministry.

In addition, NEC is also funding a study commissioned by the Director General of Civil Aviation for a comprehensive study and roadmap for civil aviation in Northeast. A study on the Border Trade by Research and Information System for Developing Countries has also been commissioned by NEC. In the power sector, NEC and PowerGrid Corp have jointly funded the preparation of DPRs for strengthening transmission, sub-transmission and distribution systems in Northeast India.

Nagaland University is a Central University established by the Government in India in the state of Nagaland. It was established in 1994 with campuses at Kohima, Lumami and Medziphema. There are 47 colleges affiliated to it, with a total student enrollment of about 18,000. It is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, with the latest grade of C++.

Nagland University :The Nagland University was established by the Nagaland University Act, 1989 of the Parliament on 6th Sept. 1994. It is the only Central University in the State having three campuses, viz., Lumami Headquarters, Kohima and Medziphema. At present the University is functioning from its Kohima Campus as Interim Headquarters. The University is located in the tribal dominated State of Nagaland having borders with Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Myanmar (Burma on its long eastern stretch). Each Campus has its own administrative and academic unit to manage the day to day educational affairs.
