Madras University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of southern India. The University area of jurisdiction has been confined to, however, 3 districts of Tamil Nadu in recent years. This is consequent to establishment of various universities in the State and demarcation of the University territories. This University has been growing from strength to strength while widening its teaching and research activities.
The University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thrivallur and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology are the main portals at the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University Concentrate in research activities where Ph.D., Programme is available in their respective field of specialisation.
The University is also offering teaching and Research programmes in 4 Campuses of Madras University. The 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over in 4 Campuses organised into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialisation, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes.

Madras University, Chennai (Tamil Nadu), in collaboration with UK Universities, has invited applications for admission into the following joint online postgraduate (PG) programmes, to be offered in the ensuing session 2011. The M Sc in International Environmental Management programme will be offered in collaboration with University of Northampton, UK, while, M Sc in Sustainable Development for Urban Environments programme will be offered in collaboration with Staffordshire University, UK. University of Madras is one of the three oldest universities in India.

The Publics Petition dated 11-11-1839 initiated the establishment of Madras University. It was in January 1840 with Mr.George Norton as its President, The University Board was constituted. In 1854 after a lapse of 14 years Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this on 5th September 1857 by an act of legislative council of India the University was established. The University was organised in the Model of London University.

The University of Madras is one of the three oldest universities in India (along with the University of Calcutta and the University of Mumbai). The University of Madras, organized on the model of the University of London, was incorporated on 5 September 1857 by an Act of the Legislative Council of India. However the University is regulated by University Grants Commission of the Central Government of India since ‘Education’ is in the Concurrent List of Indian Constitution. The university is situated in the southern city of Chennai (formerly known as Madras). It has six campuses in the city – Chepauk, Thondaimaan vazhagam, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravayal and Chethpet. More than 50 Departments offer a range of specialisation subjects.
In 2004, all engineering courses of the University were shifted to Anna University. The University provides affiliation to several colleges for numerous courses. However the University has managed to start parallel curriculum to most of the Computer related courses of the engineering curriculum as Arts curriculum. The various departments of the University also conduct research in addition to teaching. There are nearly 43 external research institutes in addition to centres of excellence within the University.
